I am a sales rep for a large chemical company. I posted my resume on a job board to see what was out there and have gotten a few calls and an offer. My current job seems to lack upward mobility. I currently earn 48k , about 10k in bonus, company car with gas and insurance paid, cell phone paid, labtop with wireless, full tuition reimbursement which I am currently using to earn a masters degree. However, I was offered a job earning 60k plus commission, car for company use (not personal like my current job) and I would have to wait 1 year for reimbursement. I think that I can do really well on the commission schedule. However, I am worried about stopping classes for 1 year. I have 1.5 years left for my M.S. degree in Management. I am not struggling financialy but the extra money would be nice. Just worried about stopping the classes for 1 year.

go for the new job as long as its a field you think you will enjoy. I would try to continue taking some classes towards your masters, fund them with the difference in your new income and then get reimbursed in a year.

That $12K salary difference isn't THAT much. You should list ALL the other benefits and the estimated value of each.

A car with gas and insurance included that you can use for personal use, can add up if you have to buy a car, pay insurance and gas. Likewise the cell phone and laptop.

Often companies that offer tuition reimbursement require you to continue working for that company for a certain period of time or you have to pay back all or part of the reimbursement.

If you add all this up, plus having to wait to finish up your degree, that salary increase doesn't look that great.

That's a tough call, but if I were sure the new job was stable I think I would go for that. It's always good to move around a little bit, it shows the ability and skill to be successful in different environments. The Masters is fine but there is no need to rush that, and you wouldn't necessarily have to stop.

Only you can assess what the trade-offs are worth. However, if you will have your MS in 1.5 years, you'll be "more marketable" then and there will be more opportunities like the position you're contemplating. So think carefully.

The worst thing is to be stagnant. If you don't think you are moving forward in you job, its time to go. The rest, classes etc will take care of itself. You must be interested in your job or nothing else matters!

I THINK YOU SHOULD STAY IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION. YOU ONLY HAVE A YEAR AND A HALF LEFT FOR YOUR DEGREE AND THEN YOU WILL MOVE ON TO BIGGER AND BETTER HORIZONS. IN YOUR JOB NOW, YOU HAVE STABILITY AND REALLY EVERYTHING THING YOU NEED TO MOVE FORWARD IN LIFE. WHY WOULD YOU BE WORRIED ABOUT UPWARD MOBILITY IF YOU WILL BE LEAVING IN A YEAR AND HALF, ANYWAY?
