Many people are confused, especially the stupid ones, as to what needs to be double clicked and what doesn't.

its a setting to let the pc know the pointer"mouse"wants to open a application. The double click is indeed for double check as how many apps would we have opened unintentionally :) and you will find its mainly shortcuts that need double click not like quick launch icons :)

It might be to prevent you from accidently clicking and opening something.

Like, say your arm accidently hit the mouse and it clicked on top of a program. If double clicking didn't exist, the program would open (which can be frustrating if you've got a slow computer, and its one of those programs or games that take 5 years to load and then forever to exit out of)

You can disable the double-clicking in the mouse options in the Control Panel but it is like this as one clicks can be made accidently. Double-clicks means you want to choose it and open it.

I would think it's to provide greater functionality for those of us who are somewhat less stupid.
