Maybe this is a media thing, all people that play sport professionally or otherwise have passion for what they do, and rarely do they give less than 100%.
The key difference between the Rugby players and the Football players is exposure, the same is true for the coaches.
The England football manager is constantly in the public eye, his counterpart in rugby is mentioned and interviewed less often, this is the same for the players.
Out of the public eye the rugby coach can work with his team, the football coach is constantly bombarded with opinion, pick Beckham, don't pick Lampard, criticism of the team happens before they have even played, the pressures are different.
The footy team loses, the press go mad, the rugby boys lose the press is normally supportive.
The same is true for the top club sides.
If you took out pictures into the street even today of the two international coaches, most would recognise McLaren, most would not recognise Ashton.
With the exception of Wilkinson, how many would be able to name the rugby players, yet most could name at least two if or more of the footy players
The rugby players having had a terible game against the South Africans early on regrouped and were allowed to pull themselves out of the hole.
The England players were instantly criticised for their performances against Paraguay in the first game of the last world cup.
The footballers play with greater expectations, they know that a single mistake can bring the whole nation down on their heads.
Players of all sports play better without fear, we need to get off the back of the England football manager and his players, and allow them time to succeed.
Bobby Robson as England manager came within an ace, or at least a cross bar or two of winning the world cup in 1990, it took him almost eight years to build that team.

Football authority like the FA and their main coaches should never have competitions per se as their only objectives - they can only be used as criteria, motivation - the objective must be the brand of football, the style, the strategy based on English characteristics. Then maybe the 3Lions would be consistently rank as among the World's Top 3.
The manager is vitally important; so are the other "have-to" that must come with the job. The media, the fans, the FA are all short-sighted - this is the crux of the problem for English football. The players in the English national team are worldclass material. The manager, the system, the establishment never allowed the lads to claim their deserved place... at the top!
Passion cannot be the only thing to produce worldclass performance consistently. The FA has got it all wrong.
