Both the ports are for data connectivity. Both the ports talk to each other as per the network configuration. let say if you have same subnet on both the ports but on different media then both will talk like end nodes ( who has network LAN like connectivity) in case both has diffrent subnets then both will talk to each other like they define diff network ends.
Also the comunication table can be made dynamicaly thru RIP or other protocols. But the best way is to tell eighter ports who is their next hop.
