Cells have self destruct mechanisms. There are many ways a cell will die. If there is internal damage then they shut themselves down for protection. Sometimes they get "stay alive" messages from other cells. If they lose this then they shut down.

Many cells must die in order to perform their intended function. Most cells are formed when a stem cell (with a complete set of DNA) splits into two cells with complete sets of DNA. However the DNA is not needed by circulating red blood cells and is lost. A hair shaft grows due to normal cell division within a follicle but the DNA is not needed in the shaft and is lost. The upper layer of skin was formed by cell division (while deeper) but is not needed in the 'dead' horny layer that wears off (same for nails which are like hairs glued together). Brain cells do not easily divided (perhaps for limited repair) and original DNA is maintained in each cell. Chemotherapy of cancer patients is intended to interfere with the DNA and division of cancer cells that are rapidly multiplying (but also affects hair cells and cells that line the gastric tract that are sloughed off and also rapidly multtiplying). Certain cells may divide only a certain number of times (about 52?) then stop dividing because each division can potentially change the ending(s) of DNA strands. Thereafter these cells may age and lose function and die.

Some sequence in the gene that contain informations about cell's death or called Apoptosis Program.
Cell death begin with the leak from lysosom. It will cause the hydrolitic enzymes in lysosom work to destroy many proteins and nucleic acid in a cell.
