I started piano when I turned 20. I had always loved the sound of the piano and told myself that someday, I was going to play.
I had played organ, though, when I was really young and was already familiar with keyboards, as I had pretty much mastered the organ by age 12. I re-taught myself keyboard on piano, took about a year's worth of lessons, and am now playing in public (today, actually!)

Me! Me!
I started violin in my late 40s. And just started classical guitar, and I'm now OUT of my late 40s. (*owie* I'm MY parents' ages...that's so weird.)
Violin was tough because I'd never played a bowed instrument. It was easier for me because I have a long and solid musical background, and the theory is the same.
I had always wanted to learn to play violin, and never had the time or the money. Now, I have both. So, I spent 3 years taking violin lessons, and I'm good. I'm not fabulous, but I'm good. (Note to self: Practice violin more)
Same with classical guitar. I'm not fabulous, but I'm getting better, and I wanted to learn.
When you get older, you can either look back with regrets or look ahead with enthusiasm. I'm not really big on "regrets".

My very good friend Helen started learning the saxophone after she got one for her 30th birthday from her hubby!!
She has had weekly lessons and practices a lot and it is really paying off.
I think you are more likely to put the effort in if you learn an instrument later on in life... I learnt the flute when I was at secondary school and never practiced!! :)
