Have you seen how easily people can use photoshop to edit pictures of girls to make them look really really thin?
I am disgusted to see how the media defines “beauty” and even more so at the measures people take in order to achieve this “beauty”.
Are you writing a report? or something of the like? I've taken a look at some of the answers above, maybe you should take a look at the relationship between gender and body image.

To a certain extent, yes. Whether you think you are not influenced by the media, you are influenced by at least, the norm -healthy weight/size. Once you start working on these, image will follow suit.

I think we can't help but see "beautiful" people on TV, movies, ads, etc., but we have to remember only certain body types get selected for that. We don't all fit into that image.
And even though skinny models are still favored, Americans are still getting bigger and bigger... so I guess the media hasn't influenced us that much.
