The Olympics take millions of dollars to hold, and countries send in their best super-athletes to win. Is it an entertaining peaceful event, or just a big pride-fest opportunity for countries to say, "we're the best"?

The problem with any organization that controls lots of money is the people in control lose sight of their objective.

The IOC has become a monster. The committees have been involved in bribes to pick sites.
They have voted in political blocs, not in the best interests of the athletes.

The board of directors are there for life and keep voting for themselves, so that new blood can not get a voice.

They do not give any prize money to the athletes.
It has always been a political venue for countries.
It is more powerful than any country, and is immune from outside influence.

Read the book "The Dishonored Games" and find out how an ex Franco (Spanish fascist) official Juan Samaranc, turned the games into the cheap, sleazy spectacle they have become through his deals with the sport equipment manufacturers, media moguls, athletic organization big Whigs etc. He started with a lowey room in Switzerland and by the time he retired the organization IOC and he became megamillionaires.

Whatever it is, it is a great event when it does happen and I am very very pleased that London have it 2012. I live 30 minutes from Stratford so will be looking to go there.

Besides, what's wrong with a country putting on an event. it's churlish to say, they want to say we are the best, they are saying, we want to show we can put on a great show.

I would not say that is the case with the Winter Olympics. You can go bobsledding in both Lake Placid, NY and Park City, Utah actual Olympic tracks and this is only one of many venues that are open.
