I think what lies within you determines what lies before you, i.e. your values/beliefs determine your actions/desires. So I choose the "within."

The thing that lies before me because I try never to have anything lie within me. Lies are not my cup of tea.

Very good philosophical question, I'm sorry "certain" people don't understand it.
Anyway for me, both matter but what lies within matters more because listening to what lies within, helps you in the long run.

The things that lay within are the most important. They come naturally and you can not change who or what you are if you follow what is inside. I believe that those things that are in front of me are changeable for better or worse and it is a choice we all make everyday. That which is inside is who we really are and though we may try to put on airs so to speak eventually people see through us and the really us show up. We need to be true to ourselves and to do that we need to become what is naturally inside of us and quit trying to be what we are not.

both matters to me but the things that lie before me matters more. Those things before me are yet for evaluation and scrutiny for their worth. While those within me have been internalized and are part of who I am.

Does this not really mean anything?

Edit: Oh, so it's like "nature vs. nurture" then, right? This description of the relationship is a little cryptic, that's all.

In the modern world, nurture (the things that "lie before you") is undoubtedly more important. That simply means one's opportunities in life are (unfortunately) strongly related to the conditions into which one is born.

Early man would have been affected much more by genetics. The industrial and technological revolutions cemented the fact that we've evolved into a world which no longer exists.
