At the time of the decision to attack Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the US had spent 3 (April-June 1945) months battling the Japanese Army on Okinawa, in the fiercest, longest battle fought in the Pacific. The US forces had suffered over 50000 wounded and dead, while the Japanese military had over 100000 killed, and the civilian population sustained almost 150000 casualties.
Based on that, and since the thinking was the Japanese would not surrender, estimates at the time of casualties from invading the Japanese main islands were for over 1 million US casualties, with millions of Japanese military and civilian casualties as well. To persuade the Japanese to surrender and eliminate the need for an invasion, President Truman made the decision to use the atom bomb, and Hiroshima was selected as the target. When no surrender offer was received after that, Nagasaki was selected as the next target; after its bombing, the Japanese asked to surrender and end the war.

Nagasaki was not the primart target for the second bombing it was selected from the list of targets given them when the primary location was obscured by weather, so for the city Of Nagasaki it was chance that seasled thier fate. The biggest reason for the use of the abomb was to convice Japan continuation of the war was futal it was time to end the war. The Invasion of the home islands was estimated to cost the Americans almost a miliion men in casualties.

The Japaneese people were determind NOT to give up. The cost of American and Japaneese lives would have been astrinomical had the allies invaded with conventional weapons. Plus the war would have gone on for years. By dropping the bombs and demonstrating the devistation it broke the will of the Japaneese people.
They had no way to defend against this weapon and the casulties we insurmountable. By dropping the bombs it actually sparred lives although the casulties were apalling. The Emporer of Japan decided he could not win against this warfare and feared the Japaneese people would be wiped from the planet. (He did not know the US only had the 2 bombs).
It is very frightening that in every world war countries have not hesitated to use the most advanced weapons available. I shudder to think of the devistation if there is a third world war. No doubt nuclear weapons will be used.
Pray for Peace.

The allies had bombed 63 japanese cities into oblivion and the Japanese were "looking" for a third country to discuss a
posible surrender and terms. The American president put
it as They know where to find us when they are prepared to
surrender fully and unconditionally but they are not willing yet.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki demonstrated a willingness and an
ability to wipe Japan off the map forever with the current
military resources of the time. It was a horific weapon that gave the Japanese good reason to capitulate.
Did you notice, they never targeted the leadership so they
would have somebody to surrender?

With the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor at the very time the Japanese were talking peace sessions with the US, Japan became our mortal enemy. Refusing to surrender after millions of casualties of American soldiers and Japanese civilians. Pres. Truman decided to drop the atom bombs on the two Japanese cities, thus bringing their immediate surrender and ending the war that would have cost many more thousands of American soldiers lives. Was it necessary, when ur at war, the goal is to win or stop the fighting. The cost, more of our soldiers killed or spare the Japanese people. What would ur choice be ??

The United States felt that Japan was not going to surrender no matter what it took, except a invasion
We knew that Japan was preparing itself for that invasion, it was training its people (women and children included) in various kinds of combat
We knew that to take Japan by invasion could take several years just to accomplish it, and that it would cost many lives
the estimate was at least a million lives
Now, was it neccesary...... yes and no
What we didnt know at the time was that the Emporer of Japan was all ready preparing to surrender. He had realized that the war was lost, but wasnt sure how to go about it.
We didnt know this, so we felt we only had two choices.
Bomb, or invasion.

1.) Truman favored a swift, much faster end to WWII. japan refused to surrender before the atomic bombs were dropped. after the first one, they still refused. after the second, they finally admitted defeat.
2.) not having bombed japan would have meant many more months and years of warfare. a direct japanese invasion would have inflicted many more casualties on both sides
3.) the soviet union would have possibly invaded japan, thus preventing a US occupation
4.) Retaliation for Pearl Harbor
5.) bombing of civilians is using terror tactics to instill fear in the japanese government to take action to prevent more civilian casualties
