Anime girls cause poor body image in women?

I hate anime girls. I hate those unrealistic sexual anime girls with giant boobs and small waists. (Not good for my self-esteem. This is what causes women to have poor body image) Women like me hate them- they are worse than Barbie dolls! I wish I can blast them into outer space or explode them! Get rid of them! Get rid of all anime with sexual themes! Do you agree with me or not?

This question really aggravated the hell out of me. I've been thinking about how to answer this question for a while now, but my short answer is no, I emphatically disagree with you. Since you are bringing this blame down on anime girls, I'll leave all discussion of real women out of this.

First of all, let's look at the anime girls you actually have a problem with. The girls with unrealistically giant boobs and impossibly tiny wastes. A large majority of those type of girls are idiotic, clumsy ditzes who are almost completely incompetent.
For example:
Mayu (Ninomyia-kun)
Aoi (Myself; Yourself)
Ren (DearS)
Yuna (Maburaho)
Yuna (Mamoru)
Katsura (School Days) (she was crazy more than clumsy)

Not all huge breasted women fit that mold of being a ditz though. How about we look at some of the hugely breasted women who are intelligent, smooth, and have good personalities?
-Tina (Ai yori Aoshi)- She tries to make Kaoru fall in love with her. Instead Kaoru chooses the normal looking, flat chested Aoi.
-Nancy (Read or Die)- The evil villian loves her, and she was in love with him. However, it's discovered that the evil villian only loved her for her body and saw her as a thing. This shows how only a villian would want people because of their looks. She leaves him, and ends up with no one in the end.
-Karura (Utawarerumono)- Tries to suduce Hakuoro. Hakuoro only has eyes for the smaller chested Eruruu, and ignores the advances.
-Faye (Cowboy Bebop)- Doesn't end up with Spike. Spike instead only loves Julia, who once again posseses only normal body sizes.
-Siesta and Kirche (Zero no Tsukaima) Both try to suduce Saito. Saitio loves this, and he loves big breasts. However, he ends up falling in love with and marrying the short, flat chested Louise Siesta gets no one, and Kirche is pretty much a whore, but finds no true love.

Now this isn't true for EVERY ridiculously proportioned anime girl, but I've seen more anime than 99.9% on Yahoo Answers, and I can tell you that for the most part they fit into one of these groups. These big breasted anime girls seem to usually either be idiots, or they don't fair well in relationships. Does that really make you want to aspire to be like them?

Now lets look at how real people (men) look at anime girls. Ever heard of Saimoe? Probably not. It's a yearly compitition where people vote on who the best anime girl of the year is. Guess what? There isn't a single giant chested girl left this far into the competition. In fact I don't think there were more than a handful out of the 128 that made it past the preliminaries, and I don't think any of them made it into the top 32.

If you ask people who the "hottest" anime chick is, obviously those with bigger breasts come into the picture for a lot of people. However, if you ask people who their favorite anime girl is or if you look at questions (like the ones on yahoo) that are like "if one anime person was real, and you could marry them, who would it be?" you find that almost ALL the girls who make that kind of list don't have ginormous boobs. They just aren't what most of us are looking for.

And you want to "get rid of all anime with sexual themes!" ? So if something is sexual it's automatically bad? I don't even know where to begin with that one...

I had to think long and hard on how to respond to your question. First and foremost, anime, like any other form of entertainment out there in the world, is a business. Their main objective is monetary. You have heard the old saying "sex sells". If you are going to bring down just a small piece of an anime genre, then you have to include Hollywood movies and television shows too as well as the music industry. Don't tell me that the majority of these television shows use normal size women or even plus sized women?

The issue of "women and self image" have been debated for such a long time and your question is no different. The media is not responsible for telling you how you should look and feel. Their only goal is to entertain..simple as that. If you don't like it, then all you have to do is just change the channel or turn off your television and do something that will change your life.

There are some forms anime that I too am NOT a fan of (i.e. hentai, child-themed porn, yaoi). I simply just refuse to cater to those kind of animes...meaning my money goes elsewhere.

Not all of them, but most of them. It is only natural for the artist to draw people he (most of the artists are men) considers attractive, and when some of these under-socialized guys are drawing their 'dream girls' they make them as exaggerated as possible.

Many are just disgusting and people should not degrade themselves by looking at them.

I don't want to imply that you should rejoice in their misfortune, but please realize that many of the men who read this stuff also fail to develop good relationship skills. If these things cause you pain, well, it also causes them pain and they often don't realize the reason all their lives. They keep going back to the hentai for prompt temporary relief, and wonder why nobody likes them. So it is sort of a self-fulfilling curse.

You seem like an intelligent and sensitive girl. I am sure that there any men out there who will appreciate you for your many good qualities, not just your appearance.

Instead of looking for a role model in the anime world perhaps one from the real world might work better. All the arguments and complaints about how women are portrayed in animation, movies, etc isn't going to amount to anything as long as it sells tickets, DVDs, cosmetics, etc. Bottom line and the painful truth. Money will always have the last word. And in the entertainment industry, beautiful, "plastic" people are what sell.

I am speaking as a mature young woman and as an anime fan.You obviously don't know anything about this. The majority of those who watch Anime are men and just like any other guy, men are always sexually driven. Anime has at least five target audiences. Children, girls only, boys only, girls and boys together, and XXX crowd. Its sad to say, but the animators who produce such creations do so only to boost ratings and/or raise more money for future productions. Does it work.... OF COURSE IT DOES! Using such displays of the female body on any cover will attract any guy no matter what. You see such things everywhere, but should we stop it? Please, if we were really that insensitive and immature, we'd go straight to the source and cut off their balls! How do you like that? You my ignorant foe, are entitled to an opinion as am I, but I at least am more aware and cool about the situation. No matter if its animes or barbie dolls, MEN ARE EASILY DRIVEN TO SEXUAL IDEAS! Its either feed their fetish or see them later on raping an innocent child, girl or boy! And about Japan, no one can EVER bash their reputation. They are more productive, cleaner, and smarter than the average american by far. Hey, I would never bash America, I'm just stating the truth. The point is, men are pigs and certain animes feed their sex fetish, nuff said. No matter how much you and your group protest, Otakus nationwide will fight you. I actually have parents who love me and are proud of me. They even interact with my anime hobbies. I consider myself lucky to have discovered Anime. If it wasn't for my great friends and anime, I'd be a souless body shrivelling in a corner wondering why I'm still alive in this messed up society. I think thats enough ranting with you. no, looks affect plenty of things even in real life, it affects how people think of you, if affects how you get promoted in a job(i read an article about this and statistics show people would get hired more based on their image,even if they do poor in a job), how people why people would want(or not want) to talk to you, how popular it would get, and why, why people want to watch that show. i would bet 500 bucks you would watch a show with hot guys than a show with some fat and ugly dude.

i do think your right for the most part, after seeing that most women probably want boob jobs and whatnot. all though apparently they need that crap on tv. they should make the anime women and rest of the characters more realistic, not just some old guys sick fantasy.

Anime is the worst as far as demeaning women. Go to Japan and you'll see XXX anime on street corners and bus stations. I'm especially terrified at how much it targets CHILDREN. So many young females are targeted in anime..the schoolgirl with overblown sexual areas is very common. I believe we must fight this and not buy these kinds of "entertainment". It's sick and violent!
