I've been off of the Depo Provera shot for about a year and half now and I've I had two very irregular periods since then, and then my periods just stopped. I've also been experiencing cramps but no actuall bleeding is occuring . My doctor recommended something to start the period again but I am not sure if this will cause more complications. I don't know if its just better for me to wait for the periods to start naturally? But I am concerned because my regular cycle has not been active for almost two years now. Does any one know of any good contraceptive that will help with my heavey periods and horrible cramps? Thats the only reason I got on the Depo in the first place. Any advice?

Based on what some of my friends who took Depo-Provera said it can take up to a year for the periods to come back but for some it may take a bit longer. Sometimes they can restart the period by giving estrogen. I would recommend asking your doctor about the possibility of a hormone that could be causing your periods to be heavy.

Also, to help with the cramping I found that eating things that are rich in iron such as spinach, raisins, and peanut butter (if not allergic to peanuts of course) can help ease some of this and also ease the flow of the periods some.

If you wait for them to start naturally, it could take several years for them to come back.

Immediately after depo I started Kariva (pill) and mine came back in three months. I've been on Kariva for 1 1/2 years now.

I have had zero side affects, my periods last for three days and are very light with no cramps.
