I think for the first time ever the Boss was emotionally attached because he had his sons handle this and you know he loves to change things up when they are not going well and i think that he just wanted to see someone else in the dugout. Torre said it best "If they wanted me back I would be back." Obviuously he has more then enough money but at least he didn't just boot him although that may have been better then a slap in the face deal.

do not let him back?

ok lets get the facts straight..

5 million offer, with bonuses leading to 8 million a year
= best manager wage in MLB
=he hasnt got a title last 7 years with probably the best lineup
in baseball
=he lost the 14 of the last 17 playoff games
----------------------------------------------------------
concidering all that I would say the yankees offered him too much and if any other manager was in his shoes and under achieved the last 7 years, he would of been out of Yankee stadium faster then he can say "yankee doddle dandee" let alone recieve a 5 million deal. Torre unfortunetly got overpaid all these years and his ego got bigger then what he's truely worth.....
in either case he should ask the average person how much
they make per year, then claim a 5 million dollar a year offer which happens to be the best in MLB is a slap in the face... that statement alone is outragous! he should get a reality check quick.

The nerve of the Yankees, asking Joe Torre to earn a portion of his pay by getting his team through the playoffs. They ought to be ashamed.

The Yankees playoff failures are due to their COMPLETE lack of starting pitching, not Joe Torre. When Chen Ming Wang is your ace, you're not going to win many 5 or 7 game series'.
