Gold, Aluminium, Chlorine and Oxygen are elements while Sugar and salt are compounds.
Molecules (i.e. the smallest units) of an elements are composed of atoms of the same element while compounds are are a combination of more than one element.
For example, water is a compound of the elements Oxygen and Hydrogen.

Gold, oxygen, aluminum, and Chlorine are all elements.
This rule even applies if there are more than one atom of the element.
Salt and sugar are compounds.
Salt, also shortened as Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is made from 1 atom of sodium, and 1 atom of chlorine. It is an ionic bond, because sodium easily gives up its valence to chlorine in order to have both elements at a stable pace.
There are many different forms of sugar, but the most common is glucose, also shortened as C6H12O6, meaning it has 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms, and 6 oxygen atoms.

GOLD - element
SUGAR - compound (sucrose)
SALT - compound (sodium chloride)
ALUMINUM - element
OXYGEN - element
CHLORINE - element
Element - made from single substance only.
Compound - made from two or more elements.
I suggest you buy a periodic table of elements so that you have the list of all the elements discovered.
Hope I've helped.
