My sister and I were very fortunate that we had a stay-at-home mother for at least the first part of our lives (8 and 10). When we moved north so that Dad could find a better job, Mom worked while we were in school but would be at home. Later, my dad lost an eye in an accident at the garage he owned, so Mom had to operate the station till he was allowed to work again. After school, we would walk home or drop by the garage, which had a small room near the bay where we had a b&w TV and a table and chairs to study until it was time to go home and fix supper. Back then, there were no fast-food places, but there were a few cafes. Still, I think we nearly always had a homecooked meal. Eating out was a special occasion~though we probably would have preferred Mom's cooking!
When Mom had to take a factory job and Dad was working, my sister and I would try to put together a good meal for them. We tried to help out as much as we could. Junky stuff just wasn't kept around, especially because there was no money to spare on it. Also, the stores were not packed with all of the choices that you see today, so I don't think children and teens were as tempted by food that isn't healthful.
I know that, although we were quite poor, we did get by pretty good. Mom had a lot of imagination about meals. There were an awful lot of meals that were only milk gravy on bread that we could buy really cheap. But, if we could manage groceries, we had really good meals because Mom is an excellent country-style cook.
I consider my sister and I so lucky for our growing-up experiences. We learned how to scrimp and save and how to do without; we also learned that it was OK to have a treat once in awhile.

Mom and grandma cooked for me every night until I turned about 13. Then grandma moved to Mexico and mom was too busy with work. But I cooked for myself since they both taught me to cook when I was 7.

Mom cooked for us but I often as the oldest rescued family meals by volunteering to do the cooking. She is from Japan and had never seen grilled cheese, meat loaf, blackberry cobbler, pasta or Mexican food. You get my drift.
