It is a budget DX10 card that has good HD video but weak gaming capability. It is just comparable to the 7300GT in games.
The 8600GT is better because it has twice the number of stream processors as the 8500GT. The 8600GTS is the souped-up version of the 8600GT. BUT if your processor is powerful enough, you might want to consider the high end cards like the upcoming 8800GT or the 8800GTS.

8500GT is odd because GT is how nVidia usually markets the speedier version of their high end consumer cards, but the 8500 number designates it as the entry level card for the 8xxx series. It probably means that BFG tweaked the nvidia spec to squeeze a few Mhz more out of an 8500 card. TomsHardware.com has pretty good video card comparative benchmarks. Look there to see if an 8500 meets your needs.

I know that the 8600GT can be acquired for $126 AUD. It is among the low end of the high end range of the GeForce 8 series.
