He's a very fascinating chessplayer.
For a politician he lacks diplomatic skills.

Obviously by his successful career as a chess player, he is a very intelligent person. Whether intelligence as a chess player translates into intelligence as a government official is a difficult question.

As a chess player, he was a bit of a maverick taking on the established authorities. Mostly to get his own way, but still a person willing to fight to change things.

Obviously, given the current situation in the Russian Federation, in which the Putin government is trying to create an essentially one-party system (like Mexico or Japan in the period between 1950-1970), the opposition feels the need for a leader who is somewhat of an international celebrity and, thus, immune to some of the more sinister tactics that the Putin government has used against other individuals who have challenged the authority of the government.

I think the opposition situation is a little bit hopeless as the government essentially controls all media. I also think there is a tendency (after the chaos of the Yeltsin years) for the majority of the voters to want a stronger leadership. Obviously, the absolute media control increases the support for the government by some degree.

I saw him on Real Time last night and was quite impressed with his assessment of the relations between Bush and Putin. I thought his comments about how Putin's government relies on high oil prices and a destabilized Middle East were very interesting and I liked his sense of humor too. Very sharp man and I wish him success!

A great chess player! Very impressive mind and grasp of situations.
Isn't he half Armenian? (not that that has anything to do with your question but I seem to remember something about that)
