Harry was born July 31st 1980.
James and Lily were killed the October after Harry turned 1.
Book years are
1-1991 – 1992
2-1992 – 1993
3-1993 – 1994
4-1994 – 1995
5-1995 – 1996
6-1996 – 1997
7-1997 – 1998
Harry turned 18 in July 1998. The book ends in May or June 1998. If you talking about today 2007, Harry would have just turned 27 this past July.

The books mainly avoid setting the story in a particular real year; however, there are a few references which allow the books and various past events mentioned in them to be assigned corresponding real years . The timeline is sufficiently set in Chamber of Secrets, in which Nearly-Headless Nick remarks that it is the five-hundredth anniversary of his death on October 31, 1492; thus, Chamber of Secrets takes place from 1992 to 1993. This chronology was again reiterated in Deathly Hallows, in which the date of death on James and Lily Potter's gravestone is October 31, 1981. Thus, as Harry was a year old at the time of his parents' murders, his year of birth is 1980 and the main action of the story takes place from 1991 (beginning of Philosopher's Stone) to 1998 (end of Deathly Hallows).
Therefore,Harry is only 17 when he kills Voldemort.

The books take place in the 1990s I hate to tell you. And we never see an 18 year old Harry. His birthday is July 31st, the defeat of Voldemort in book seven occured before the end of what would have been Harry's seven year. Early in the book Harry turned 17. The epilogue is nineteen years after Harry defeated Voldermort, so we see harry at the following ages:
1
10
11
12
13
14
15
16
17
36
Harry was born in 1980 and began attending Hogwarts in 1991.

If I have been you i could attempt to attend....in spite of the indisputable fact that i could say I sympathize with the discomfort you will be feeling for no longer having the e book yet.... :( i'm hoping you reside to tell the story without it till January. that ought topersistent me to the depths of insanity for specific, yet i appreciate you having long previous this long without the e book. we could purely say, life debts get repaid. human beings die, an animal dies, "neither can stay together as the different survives" is trickery, and Harry, Ron, and Hermione slip by darkish wizards palms TOO many situations... it relatively is insane.... Sorry i'm no longer too quite some a help..

I also figures this out whn I read the book months ago. The setting for HP7 is in 1996. It is something you have to look really hard for and it is a very very very very very common mistake if anyone actually cares about the years in a fiction novel who knows it could have been they only used some numbers not 10 that keep repeating with a number i n front of it.

because the books begin in the year 1991 and end in the year 1998. Harry is only 17 at the end of the books.

Rowling seems to be coming up with all kinds of interesting answers to questions these days...
However I wouldn't question an error in a fantasy book like HP7. I'm sure there are several errors, and I still liked the book. If you want to point it out to the 'real' fans and discuss it, try http://www.mugglenet.com/
It's a good site for fan interaction.

No, because she meant to write one book a year, the year that Harry Potter 7 is really in is 1999.
