Usually people say hurtful things like idiot, stupid, dumb***, ect. To make everyone around them feel just as bad as they do. Most of the time they are just looking for a reaction out of you and if you dont give it to them they usually get tired and stop being such a jerk to you. :) hope that helped :)

Because you do not agree with them and follow their belief system. People want others to do as they do and think the same way and when you don't you are an outcast. Kind of like religions and politics.

its a simple trade off
humiliating somebody else makes them feel better
it has nothing to do with you but says plenty about the other person - bad language, poor upbringing, lack of education & respect for others
