Okay, ignore most of what you hear out there as its just past confusing.

Next, since you are asking to start, that tells me you know nothing about HTML, DHTML, XHTML, Java, etc. So to try and teach you "web sites" would take years of study.

Now since Web 2.0 is out (what allows blogs, youtube, myspace, etc to work) it has become easy to "create a web site".

Just get on WordPress.com or Blogger.com or any blog of your choice. Those two are the best though. Pick a name, pick a layout, colors, name pages, input info, etc, etc. If you have done a MySpace page, a blog will be a walk in the park. Otherwise just read the blog info and it will help you.

Once the blog is set up, head off to GoDaddy.com if you wish to have a dot com. Cause right now your "dot com" so to speak is say JohnSmith.WordPress.com. But say you want JohnSmith.com. So get on GoDaddy and get your dot com for $9.20 per year. You also get a free email so you can have say John@JohnSmith.com as your email. As well you get free "forwarding".

Forwarding is allowing the dot com to go to another address for that dot com. So since you have a blog, you put your forwarding address in as the blog address (johnsmith.wordpress.com). Now when people go to JohnSmith.com, they will actually be re-routed to johnsmith.wordpress.com. If you choose the "masking" option, then they will never see the address change in the bar above, it will remain what you set it at.

Now you have a web site, that looks professional, has a dot com, professional email addrsess, forwarding, counter, archives, video, music, images, etc. ALLLLLLL for only $9.20, no web designer, no outside fee's, no web page storage, no HTML learning, etc.

I've ditched all my "sites" and swapped them over to blogs. Here is one as example, www.quietbuck.com. Unless you build sites, you'd never really realize its just a blog.

Try this site, The hosting is very in-expensive and the service is great, I host my own site with it. They also include a free ".com" domain name with all plans (whateveryouwish.com). This is VERY Easy to set up and goes through the process step-by step

Depends on what type of site you are looking to build.

Registration Purposes, try www.powweb.com, no FTP software required with these guys either.

Then you might want to get a book on HTML or find a good site that teaches it, its a basic requirement.

Then finally if you are lazy you might want to try Microsoft Publisher, make it very easy to maintain control of basic functions.
