Do you have a little something stashed away in a secret account that your wife doesn't know?

Sure, and vice versa as well. That way there are always reserves for contingencies. If everyone knows everything, there is a tendency to spend up to the limit on occasion.

There's a certain security in believing that there's a backup. There was a book and radio-TV series a long time ago called "I Remember Mama" about an immigrant family whose matriarch would always reassure the children "well, we don't have to go to the bank this week". It turned out, after the children were grown, that they discovered that Mama never had a bank account but reassured with its fictional existence, nevertheless.

No, I don't. I decided that when I got married that what was mine was my wifes and what was my wifes was my wifes. lol. Seriously, the purpose of marriage is to combine and unite. If you still have things separated than maybe you shouldn't have gotten married. Trust is important and if my wife had a "secret account" that I didn't know about I would be extremely upset. I would wonder how long this account has been active and what her furture plans are? This maybe the beginning of the end or just another account. Either way, it shows a lack of respect for you partner.

Where ever there are two persons living together some things have to be kept away for the betterment of both. And when the intentions are not wrong but for the betterment I do not think there is any wrong in doing so.

Yes. Hell yes. You never know what you might need it for.
I don't keep it to hide in case of a divorce or anything. Its more for emergency purposes. Like for gifts or big purchases for me.
The wife doesn't need to know where all my money is. They might try and spend it.

Yes, I believe it is essential, though not as a contingency, as a support mechanism. I'm sure my wife has one also.
