The guy was pissed off and i was able to calm him down. But the more I think about it, the more i realize that i was completely defenseless in that situation. My heart was pounding and maan, you hear of these things happening but you never think of them happening to you.
I was thinking of taking up a martial art...But I wonder, would it be of any use if I'm scared sh*tless in those situations? Plus i dunno if i could bring myself to seriously hurt someone. I hear aikido is a good art for self defence and there's a club on campus but i really dont know....anyways what do ya'll think?
F.Y. i am 17 in my first year in U and have never, not once ever had to fight someone.

Personally I dont think you're a coward. You didnt run you faced it like a man. It doesnt matter that you were frightened- it matters that you maintained presence of mind and that you didnt panic and run screaming like a little girl.
I've always been a fighter. I don't wait to see what happens and I don't take threats or anything. If someone tries to threaten me I knock them flat there and then- I won't give them time to get all their friends together so that they can try to beat me down.
BUT>>>>>
There are many martial arts- I can't begin to list them. There is a form on Kung Fu that I saw used by a little old man that was amazing. It was all defensive moves. He didnt harm the attacker. the dude that was trying to hit the old man got too tired to lift his arms anymore and had to leave him alone. It was incredible. I REALLY wish I could learn that. So much cleaner, so much more calm. I'm getting too old for this rock 'em sock 'em stuff.

My young friend, I was once in the military and afterwards I was a Fed and after that for years a private investigator. And many a time I talked my way out of a fight. Not because I was a coward (there were serious times when I did have to fight someone) but because I let ration and reason take over the situation whenever possible.
Think about it this way:
There are no absolutes. You could be the baddest MoFo in a bar, could kick anyone's butt easily, could get into a fight and whip the person without working up a sweat, then later step outside (feeling manly and good about yourself) and find the same guy you just beat up in that bar waiting for you with a loaded .38 and he blows you away. You beat him in a fight and he shoots you dead afterwards. You both lose.
Only fools are never afraid. Intelligent people consider all possibilities when in a disagreement with someone else and those possibilities include the fear or worry of being harmed in some way.. Even when I knew I could kick someone's butt I still maintained the rational thought process to understand that a fight was not the best solution possible.
Talking your way out of a fight means you are smart enough to be able to do so. It never means you are a coward.
If you want to learn self-defense then go for it. But please understand that self-defense is just exactly what is says it is. Self-defense.

In no way does it make you a coward. People are often far too quick to anger without giving a thought to the consequences.
Doc Watson gave you an excellent answer.
If you're considering taking up a "martial art," I can think of none better than Kung Fu. This "deflects," never "attacks." It's actually beautiful to watch. If you truly learned it, you'd have no reason to be "scared."
Also, since Kung Fu doesn't injure the other person, it wouldn't be considered a "lethal weapon," as for example, a boxer who uses his skills, seriously harms someone, & then has to prove it was self defense.
Whatever you did is no reason for this fellow to behave like an idiot. I'm glad that YOU didn't.

NO! Fighting I feel is only to defend your self in a hurting situation. Or to care for a life. What makes people to want to fight someone to really stupid. I was raised where people fought all the time. Then when I started life for myself. I thought fighting was a waste of time. When I was a bartender people would fight in the bars when they got drunk. Waste of a good time, plus money. Think smart. Stay away from those type of people who talk about it and look like they do not enjoy having fun. Fighting is wasting energy.

First off, you are not a coward. I have been in MANY fights and in a "sue happy" world, I am certain that you are better off. Plus, if you ever get arrested for it, YOU have to prove that you are not guilty. Trust me, you are better off for avoiding the fight.
As far as martial arts go, IF it is ever discovered that you are professionally trained, that will be used against you in court. I would never tell anyone what type of training you have. Again, YOU would be the guilty party. Take the class for general knowledge as this may be beneficial for future issues you may have.
It is not worth getting arrested and then trying to prove your innocence.

know it makes u smart cause u could of ended up wounded or dead or he could have and u would have to have lived with that possibly in jail. Martial Arts is great but people can and do carry guns
unless ur military/law enforcement its better not to fight unless there is absolutely no other way out . Even the professionals are bound to seek non violent means first

First of all, I gather you still have all your fingers intact and none of them broken. You can still sit infront of the monitor without your jaw dangling out broken by a punch and you can still breathe well cos your nose is not broken neither are your ribs.
The only thing bruised is your ego.
I'll just quote Sun Tzu, a famous military strategist from the Middle ages of China.
"To conquer the enemy wihout having to resort to war is a greater achievement than fighting to win every battle.
The highest for of military leadership is to overcome the enemy by strategy. The next best way is to absorb the enemy though an alliance. Third bes is to conquer the enemy in battle. The least satisfactory means of victory is to lay siege to walled cities"
There you go.

Martial Arts teaches you techniques to avoiding fights and being attacked. Violence is absolutey the last resort. A lot of people have the misconception that black belt people walk around looking for a fight. The opposite is true. You are simply aware of your surrondings and able to protect yourself if need be. And, I stress, If Need Be. You are a perfect canidate for Martial Arts. Please look into it.

No it shows your man enough to face your fears and opponents as a gentleman not as a savage. You watch too much TV call the police and report this person and get a violence order on him. This will make him think twice before he lashes out on you or anyone else. If this person breaches the violence order he will be spending a time in prison.
