This seems to be the story you read and hear about all the time. I just wondered if it had any truth to it.

this depends on ur definition of 'dropping it'. if u mean in a parking lot, that is super easy to do and is the most common. usual causes is grabbin a handful of front brake when the bars are turned.....the bike will drop like the ground became magnetic, and it doesnt take much more than a 'love tap' on the front brake. another is putting a foot down in an oil spot, and cant hold the bike. usually, little to no damage results from either case.

droppin it at speed is a different story. usual causes will be from bein a squid and attempting to take a turn too hot, panic, and slam on the back brake causing the back wheel to slide out, and dump u to the road. this sort of drop is guarenteed to basically render the bike unrideable, and u will be in a world of pain.

Every motorcycle I've owned has been on its side.

First motorcycle:
a) I was showing off riding down some stairs. The walkway below the stairs was slick.
b) Rear tire slid out, on a curved onramp.
c) I kickstarted it, not noticing it was in gear. Motorcycle jumped forward then fell over to the left.

Second motorcycle:
People backed their cars into it in the parking lot and when it was parked on the street.

Third motorcycle:
a) Grabbed a handful of brake coming into a parking lot, because a guy was coming out fast. Fell over on the left.
b) Fell over by itself while parked at the curb... or maybe it was pushed over (it was a police motorcycle).

Fourth motorcycle:
I was waiting in a gas line... and the dude at the pump backed out onto me! Geez.

Yes, but it is usually something stupid like hitting a slick spot in a parking lot. This is one of the best reasons for starting out learning on a cheap. lightweight and used motorcycle. If you get a big, expensive, new bike, when you drop it, it will cause you much grief!!

Yup. It's a learning curve. You get cocky and do things you shouldn't do, with the bikes ability or yours. It happens. As someone else already said, It's not if but when. Look at races on t.v. Those riders are the best of the best, street or dirt and they crash from time to time. The are pushing themselves and their bikes to the limit and end up going down. It's part of riding. You don't want it to happen but it does. The best way to learn is from mistakes and that means pushing yourself. It's part of the thrill, not that I want to go down and get hurt mind you. I take all the safety precautions I can when I ride but it still happens.

I've never dropped a street bike, crashed in the dirt many times.

If you mean drop it as in fall over, yeah, almost everyone does. Some people claim they've never dropped a bike, but if no one else saw it...

If you mean crash it, then a lot of people don't crash their first bike.

I did - once I forgot to put down the sidestand when I got off of it, and the other time was getting it onto the center stand. Just dumb newbie mistakes - and thankfully none too painful ones.

I didn't drop my first one, I dropped my third one (broke my hip) and have not had a problem riding since.

Now if you are saying just dropping your bike on the ground while stopped, nope, never did that.

I've "dropped" every bike I've ever owned.
Some of them dropped all by themselves.
If you mean accident or crash - in the dirt, millions of times.
On the street, twice in my lifetime of riding - less than 5mph because of ice.
