they were sitting in front of this house, that was kinda on a hill and she said this hand came out of the ground right between them and they ran home crying, my mom says she remembers her coming home all scared. many years later she thought she just dreamed about it, but her friend brought it up to her. so appearently, they both agree they saw a hand come out of the ground.

I think somebody saw the movie "Carrie", was totally freaked out by it, had nightmares, and then utilized the psychological defense mechanism known as repression.

Repression is when you involuntarily forget things that you've seen in the past in order to move forward. Things that are repressed may later resurface in life but with distorted details, i.e. something you saw in a movie or read or dreamed about, you recall as reality.

I have seen a case like this once when a person geniunely remembers getting decapitated at one point in his life, only to have his head reattached. Yes, I guess you could say that he had his head examined shortly after his sharing this little detail with me, but we have found that he was totally sane. The explanation for this is simple, he just wasn't ready to see a certain movie that he saw when he was seven (I forgot the title of the movie) and so repressed the memory.

And yes, people have had the same complaints of recalling seeing a hand come up out of the ground. The one thing they had in common? They all saw or read Carrie before they were emotionally ready.

So why did the friend bring it up if it was all in your Aunt's head? Selectivity. Remember, she was four like you said. Chances are, her friend was also four, and has thus had her ability to recall affected by the verbal reminisces of your aunt.
I.E. ,your aunt told her about it, she didn't really remember it, but because your aunt suggested it, she created a false memory.

Since the both the right lobe (visual) and the left lobe (verbal) are not yet fully developed during this period in our lifetimes, it is easy to have false recollections of things that didn't really happen.

Could have been someone who put their hand between the two girls where they were sitting and it looked to them like it was coming out of the ground. Or someone may have been playing a trick on them, which is mean to do to such young sweet little kids, but some people do it. I really do not thing a person was buried under the ground and was trying to get out. It is a cool story however! =)

How old is she? Might be a memory from seeing the movie Carrie when she was too young. Scared the bejezuz out of me and I was in my 20's first time I saw it. It's the first movie that ever made me scream. It came out in 1976.
