I recently installed windows xp on my dell 1501 notebook instead of the vista that it came with but now it's not displaying my processor speed as 1.8ghz, its saying 789. I'm not sure if its actually running at 789 or what the problem is but I'd like to change it.

Double the shown speed in XP and that is what you are running at. Upgrade the XP to latest version with all available patches and this problem may disappear...but it is really not a problem, it only looks like one...your bios is what determines what goes where when processing, and dual core is not rated the same as the old single core processor cpu's ...If the speed is what you consider normal, I wouldn't worry about it. IF graphics are appearing just as fast as they always did, then your computer is working just fine. By the way, if you used the HOME version of XP, then you are limiting your computer to 32 byte ....whereas the Pro XO uses 64 byte encoding...if your vista is set up as 64 byte, then you need the Pro version of XP to realize the power of your computer. And I do not blame you for dumping VISTA...too many problems with it..reminds me of Win ME...disaster. Good luck, Goldwing

This may seem obvious but make sure you have all the drivers installed properly including the reference drivers for the motherboard and chipset. I seen this quite a bit when swtiching from XP (when it was first out) back to 2000 and the chipset drivers weren't installed. Check with the Dell website for these drivers. Processor speed isn't determined by the operating system so most likely this is just a misread of the dual 1.8ghtz that is in your machine. Thus that goes back to updating your chipset drivers for your laptop.

Oh why do people answer when they don't know, especially an easy question like this. The processor has a feature on it called Cool N Quiet, it slows the processor down when its not being taxed in order to save power. When the processor needs to, it will speed up to the regular speed. You have nothing to worry about.
