It's a song that's often credited to an old blues singer named Leadbelly, but it's been around since even before him. It's been covered so many times. It's a 20th century, African American work song. As one of the other posters said, Ram Jam's version (released in the late 1970s) is the one most often played on radio or featured on tv/in movies.
Spiderbait's version is also rather popular and is featured in movie trailers (and movies themselves).
