My 11 month old is in the Hospital and she has kept a high fever for 4 days now. All the test they have run have come out good and show nothing. We r waiting on one more test. No meds will bring her fever down and the only thing they have mentioned is that her ELECTROLIGHTS are a little high. Thanks

these help your body's cells maintain voltages across cell membranes to carry electrical impulses. basically, they help send electrical signals through the cells in your body to help your organs fuction (help your heart to beat, lungs to breathe, etc).

the kidneys help maintain the right levels of electrolytes in your body by flushing out the amount not needed. when you're sick, you tend to lose these through vomiting/diarrhea and can also lose them when exercising heavily by sweating. that's why you are advised to drink alot of fluid when either sick or working out.

your child's levels are probably high due to the virus she has and possibly the meds/fluids they are giving her to help fight the fever.

the main electrolytes in the body are

sodium (Na+)
potassium (K+)
chloride (Cl-)
calcium (Ca2+)
magnesium (Mg2+)
bicarbonate (HCO3-)
phosphate (PO42-)
sulfate (SO42-)

hope this helps!!

Electrolytes are essential elements in the body ,
And usually go too low when people sweat but only drink water .
Too high would indicate insufficient water I think . . .
