Back when it was made there was no Peta. or at least they
weren't very big.

Peta wouldn't bother with flies...I doubt there was no real count done on the exact number of flies used....who would do that????

Most were most likely fake with only a few crawling around
and I bet they ripped there wings off is the only reason they didn't fly away.

They very Idea that people think you could train flies is ridiculous and not possible they have too short of a lifespan
and don't have ears...and what would you do give it a piece
of poo for rolling over?

It was a trick.raisins fake flies and a few with there wings pulled off to make them crawl around and look real.

It is Hollywood magic...not inventing some way to train flies
to all lay on an actor on command. It would just be easy er
to fake it rather than what everyone here is giving you as an answer.

I know the film, never counted the flies. I suppose that dozens drowned on Steiger's face alone. Of course every 1979 fly is history now.

with peta and all other animal activists that were on site, the flies were trained to play dead. no flies were hurt during the filming. (just joking) that is a really good question. i guess about 725 if they were different or 5 if they took photos, moved flies, reshot , moved flies, etc

The original or the remake?
The original used 712. The remake used virtual flies; in fact it was a virtual film.
