I'm 19 years old, am in college, and when someone says "play 'More Than a Feeling'" or "Sweet Child of Mine" it makes me sick. I grew up in the 90's, I love nineties punk and alternative. I can't STAND classic rock and people give me so much garbage for being the way I am. I think our generation lacks creativity if we have to latch onto the past for music. Todays music isn't just rap, dig deeper!!!

I can't control what bands I like listen to, so responding to my answer with "all the stuff you listened to is influenced by that" i know, and I don't care. That stuff is **** and I hate it.

G&R had their rise to fame in 87-89, anything behind the 90s pretty much blows.

I don't believe in the term (it's just radio mumbo-jumbo), but there's no shortage of listenable music from any time period, past or present.

The thing is, classic rock isn't a genre! Would you hate a band you like right now if it developed in the 70's, somehow exactly the same?"More Than A Feeling" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" are just two classic rock staples. And they're both hard rock. I'm assuming you don't like hard rock bands then, not all those other classic rock bands (although hard rock and heavy metal do make up the bulk of it). Try digging deeper, like you said. Just a little deeper, and you can find some good bands that still are rather famous.
You say you like 90's punk. Try 70's or 80's punk. Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Misfits, MC5, Dead Kennedys, Stooges, etc. They're, from what I'm assuming based on the definition of classic rock, classic rock.
Or try 80's alternative. U2, R.E.M., The Smiths, The Pixies, etc.
Although honestly, these bands are never played on classic rock stations, 'cept U2. But I'm assuming you mean stuff before the 90's.
Oh, and your wrong about the creativity statement. All music is somehow influenced by another genre. Blues slowly became rock 'n' roll, and from there, rock 'n' roll became the biggest musical phenomenon. All genres were influenced by another genre or genres.

I don't quite agree.
I mean, some people can't let go and I'll agree that most of the bands are way overrated.
And mainstream rap SUCKS;
they aren't in it for the art form, they are in it for the money and the fame.
That's not real music.
But I see how Classic Rock gets aggravating. Some people need to move on.
I mean, to today's standards, I'd consider most "classic rock" to really be pop, and people like pop because that's what everyone else is listening to. And you'll notice a lot of people wearing classic rock tee shirts for bands they are barely familiar with. It's sickening. And 90's punk and alternative is... LOVE!

Well, I'm going to start by saying, I do listen to underground music and don't believe that everything out there today is garbage. But I'm a classic rocker. Most of the most skilled and melodic musicians do belong to classic rock. If it's not what you like, fine, but you have to acknowledge that the classic are amazing and you have to have some respect for them. Btw, GN'R is NOT classic rock. And I'm 17 so I'm not so far from your age group.
*edit
Guns was formed in the late 80's. I wouldn't consider that classic rock. Would you consider the Flaming Lips classic rock? Cause the Flaming Lips is older than Guns.

GNR is not classic rock or an 80s hair band. They were big from 88-96. I would call that a 90's hard rock band. Is Soundgarden classic rock? No, and they're older than GNR. Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins started at the same time as GNR, and they're not classic rock either.

Silvertide are a young and talented "classic rock" band in that they stick to its blues roots and play rebellious music instead of whining.
Plenty of others come to mind.
Classic rock endures because it touched two generations, and continues to grab new listeners. Every band you may have liked during the 90s will list The Who, Stone, Led Zep, Beatles as influences.
Today's bands are more influenced by cheesy pop and pass it off as rock (3 Doors Down was fair warning of what was to come).
Rock en Espanol is far more creative. Bands like Bersuit, Rabanes (darn, do they rock!) and Aterciopelados deliver on the creativity.

"classic rock" used to drive me NUTS i couldnt stand it... i always had to listen to it when id go to my dads for the weekend... he lived pretty far away so sometimes at home id turn it to a classic rock channel and listen for awhile just because it would remind me of him... and it got to where there were a few songs i really grew to like, and as pop got crappier (i used to be the britney-bsb-whatever girl) i just slowly made the transition. i love all kinds of music but theres something about older rock (not ALL of it but most) that just has something special i dont hear in a lot of stuff today. Its all just a matter of opinion i guess and im proof that sometimes opinions can change haha. I cant imagine NOT listening to "classic rock" now. I personally feel like anyone who isnt even open to giving older music a chance is shutting themselves off to some amazing music, all because it happens to be old instead of new and fresh. I say find me ANY new song that sounds as amazing as Stranglehold or is as haunting as Stairway to Heaven.... and ill be glad to give it a shot... i just dont think anything has that "IT" to it at the moment.
i love hair bands too, hell yeah! :)

Maybe I'm just an old fart (approaching 40 but still have a wee bit to go) but I'd have to disagree to some extent. Of course, every era has a wide range of content and there was plenty during and before my time (the 80s) that was good and other that should die a painful death.
I see many artists today that have to use electronic manipulation of their voice to make themselves sound halfway decent. Many today have to lip-synch their lyrics because their too busy dancing to compensate for an inability to put out a decent sound without a studio to fix it for them.
Just because the song may be before your time doesn't make it bad. I'm happy to listen to 50's and 60's music and it predates me.

your question is ridiculous. all modern day rock, even your beloved punk and alternative, stems from that classic rock that seems to make you so sick. they were influenced by someone they heard when they were younger. You think they just came up with it out of thin air?
if you grew up in the 90's then GNR isnt classic rock, please learn your genres.
you hate it, good for you. if you dont want to listen to the answers given to your question then why even post the question to begin with?
I must add this since you keep adding things to your questions. Guns N' Roses last album was released in 1993, and Use your Illision 1 & 2 were released in 1991.
Does that really sound like it was in the 80's, or classic rock to you? Please keep in mind that most alternative rock started becoming popluar around 1993 or so.

I love "new" rock, such as The Used and stuff. I honestly cannot stand classic rock though. It personally has never sounded good to me. I guess I just can relate more to today's music and I just find it easier and more fun to listen to (I really don't know why though, lol).
