I live in the Chicagoland area. What is the best way to winterize your plants so that they make it through to the next year.

I'm not sure what you mean by them being both tropical and hardy. They are either one or the other. A tropical hibiscus could not withstand a Chicago winter so you would need to bring it indoors until next Spring and all danger of frost is over.
The Hardy (perennial) Hibiscus is hardy to zone 5 and can stay outside year round. It will die back during hibernation and then reemerge next Spring.
Good Luck

put two inches of a mulch (leaves and grass clippings) around the base of the plant. If it gets snow, that actually serves as a blanket. It's ok to wrap the trunk with cardboard, or other insulating material through the harshest months. Good Luck.

I prefer to pot my hybiscus and bring it in when cold whether hits. Mine continually blooms indoors ( tropical type) throught the year * as long as you cut it back hard in the fall and deadhead it :)
