For me, silence is a state from within. It is another dimension, in which I cease to "listen."
Silence has no sound, but it has imagery. Unrippled water. Windless branches. A ladybug alighting on your hand. The gentle touch of a dove's wings. The weaving of a spider's web. A star that too many years past to comprehend, once exploded. The infinite unspoken.
The sound of silence is not listening. Is it "hearing"?

Wow, great question. How to use words to describe that which can only be experienced. I would have to say the sound of silence is pure being beyond duality, beyond being separate, beyond perception. I have practiced meditation many moons (did I ever mention I am old!). There is a place within where perception stops, where there is no voice, many will think of the void, but even beyond that where the only way way to describe it is even I stop. I will not be able to explain it, but even just thinking of it on this side it feels like home. There is no need for "noise" or "guiding voices", in fact no need at all, you are. I know this sounds so very vague but we are talking about something unspeakable. Masters have used things like what is the sound of one hand clapping, or what is the sound of silence to point the direction to others, to teach their intellect to think outside of the box, but it not someplace the intellect can go. I'm doing a lousy job here so I'm just going to stop now. Thank you for the Q.

well that depends upon the type of the situation in which you are in.....
if you are a person who is kinda nervous before writing the exam and the whole place is silent and in that situation you find yourself filled up with anxiety.....
if you are a person who is just being chased up by armed men who wanna kill you and you find yourself hiding in one of the places where the killers can sort of find you easily and if silence occurs at that time, you will find yourself filled up with fright....
in the other case, in situations like you and your love separate from each other, then a silence in that case means helplessness and tears....
when you come out of your daily chores and activities that kinda tire you up, a silence will give peace and relaxation to your brain.....
when you get out of a row between any other person, a silence will bring back calmness and sort of cool you down...
so the sound of silence varies with the sort of situation in which silence is obtained...

I always thought it was the (in the song) art of sign language.
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share...
The neon light still escapes me, but, I don't understand allot of song lyrics. I had a girl friend who had 3% hearing, she would place both hands on her brothers musical instrument, a French horn I think, and her smile always brought me back to this song, "the sound of silence".

It I roar of nothingness drowning out the giggle, and laughs and screams and words and seeming unimportant but totally expected sounds of life. It is a shrill ring of you trying to listen to anything at all and hearing only the ring. In short, it is a void.
