Things considered necessities. Things such as book lights, lap-desks and such. And what is the best bang for your buck on each item?

Perfect reading conditions: a good book (naturally), a balanced spectrum or full spectrum book light, a really comfortable chair or sofa, a glass of water (or beverage of choice), and a quiet room. For extra comfort, add a blanket and a pillow.

The balanced spectrum light that I use is one from First Street. The cheapest they have is a folding desktop model http://www.firststreetonline.com/product.jsp?id=47603 but I have http://www.firststreetonline.com/product.jsp?id=16640&from=47603&pos=2 which is $34.95. It's on all day and most of the night (probably about 16-18 hours), and I haven't had to replace the bulb yet...from last Christmas. It gives you almost natural daylight. It's great!

I can't give you the best bang for your buck on the book, the chair or sofa, the glass of water or the quiet room! :)

Well, the great thing about books is they can be read anywhere - on the bus, in a waiting room, in chemistry class (under the desk), in bed... all you need is the book itself, the ability to read and an imagination. If you are uncomfortable, you can usually escape from your surroundings anyway, so you don't even notice! Having said that, it is nice to have a cushion or something to rest your head against so you don't get a sore neck. And I have one of those torches that you strap on to your forehead for when it's dark and you don't want to bother others by turning on the main light.

My favorite thing is a floor lamp to put behind my chair and shine a light on the page and not in my eyes.

An armchair pillow and hair combs to keep hair out of my face. A nearby table for your coffee/soda/whatever. If you live in california, you can't go wrong with a box of see's candies.
