Great Q Mr S,
I think it depends on the importance of the need of each at the time. I have many asian friends (mostly Chinese, Malay & Japanese) who will almost always accommodate their personal goals within their family responsibilities and live happy and productive lives in the bossom of their family.
I have also seen it overdone where a person (generally female) was made to sacrifice their life for the family - this I think was wrong.
But I have also seen the opposite where a person ignored their family to follow their own selfish whim and was a lesser person for it.
So - idk mate family is great if ALL members are prepared to make sacrifices for it.

I am more about my family obligations than my own goals.

Definitely. That is the reason why we don't get married and have children until and after we have achieved professional and financial stability.
