if her ex has a good knowledge of pc's he could have gained access...one way it can be done is thru a file he may have sent to her pc, maybe just a picture of something but that file may bring with it a bug or something which enables him to gain access.
it can be stopped and the worst case scenario is reformatting the pc.sorry but dont know exactly what u need to do tho.you can call out a specialist to check ur machine for bugs oranything that is allowing an outside user access to the pc.theycharge about £20 to come out look at it.

install a firewall ( if you dont already have one and set it to maximum and dis allow everything and then go through the programs list and only allow what you use for example Internet explorer , any messengers such as msn, yahoo or w/e and also delete any message history and disable your messengers from keeping any history.

Also do a virus and spyware scan in safe mode and ensure that you have updated all the defintions before running it. If you need suggestions with regards to anti virus or spyware let me know.

He may have had a keylogger intalled. This will send emails to a specified address with details of every thing she has done on the computer. Take it to a pro and let them check.

I've recently switched to free AEROADMIN and it looks good.
You may want to do the same as soon as you try.
Hope this helps
