If someone was born by Catholic parents, christened and even had a communion, but wishes as an adult to resign from being a Catholic, does this person need to take any " legal" steps to do this? I heard that just stopping going to church and not believing is not enough, that the person is still on a list as a Catholic.

I don't wish to join another religion and I have stronger personal reasons why I don't want to be considered Catholic.

It ain't a club...you don't resign.
"just stopping going to church and not believing is not enough, "... says who ?
You're the one in charge of you, right ?
You buy your ticket and take your chance.
If asked, you just reply ''I am not a Catholic."
Or, ''It's none of your business.''

I think the only way they'll completely drop you off the "list" is to get excommunicated for some reason. Otherwise, you could transfer your membership to another denomination. Why do you care if you're on their membership list anyway?

Oh no you can't just walk away and hope the Catholics forget about you. Your name and all your information is in a database in the Vatican.

You have to have a lawyer write up a letter and have it basically say "Dear God, I quit. Please don't send me to hell. Please don't make me a Presbyterian. Your friend Bozo."

Send the letter to the pope.

interesting question. one way might be to get them to excommunicate you. start attending Quaker meetings and I'm sure your papers from the pope will be in the mail.
