they dont have to be shows that are currently airing on tv (they can be though) because i watch most of my anime online

There is Rurouni Kenshin, and some kind of spin-off called Samurai X, the 2 part movie Trust and Betrayal is the prequel to Rurouni Kenshin there is a movie called Samurai X I can't remember what else the title said or if it did say anything else, but I do believe it is the sequel to the 2nd season and Samurai X Reflection is the end of the whole thing and the sequel to the 3rd and final season of Rurouni Kenshin (it may be from the 90s but its still great, and still in my top 5 all-time favorite anime, and manga)

Naruto, Devil May Cry Anime, Trinity Blood, and Gunslinger Girl are all good. Naruto, and Devil May Cry Anime are good for action. Gunslinger Girl is good if you want something to make you think. And Trinity Blood is a bit of both.

Well, it really depends on your tastes. I LOVE When They Cry! I've only seen five episodes, but I'm kind of addicted.
Paradise Kiss is really good, great artwork and fashions. Also: Ai Yori Aoshi, Fruits Basket, Black Lagoon, Sugar the Snow Fairy, and My-Hime is a MUST see!

If you like random cutesy and humor: Potemayo
If you like action: Darker Than Black
If you like something that makes you think: Death Note
If you like something that has to do with real life problems: NANA
If you like the thought of girls doing all the fighting: Mai-hime or Mai-otome
