Here's the real answer since I've seen the episodes. May left to head to Johto for the Pokemon Contests there. That's one of the reasons why she left. Another reason is because the show wanted to have a new girl for the new season so that's why Dawn is now traveling with Ash and Brock.

Gosh don't you know. Ash was cheating on may and seeing another woman. So Mays like "no way I have had it". And Dumped him. Honestly I think he deserved it.
