1. it is just as hard as any sport
2. ballet is harder than any sport because its so technical.
3. in dance, you do compete! it is about being against other "players"
4. and when your competeing. people judge on your technique! not how good they think you are. judgeing dance is NOT about opinion!
5. its kinda just like scores, for every technique you get wrong, points are deducted!
OMG EXPLAIN!
i understand how it's an artform but it is also quite competitave!

YES JUDGES DO JUDGE YOU LIKE SPORTS!
take golf for ex.
everyone has thier turn to show what the got, right?
in competitions it is based on points!
if your turnout is wrong, a point is deducted!
if your not pointing on your leap, -1!
not all "sports" are at all with contact!

in other "sports" you are allowed to show your pain
we could have a broken ankle. and still have to smile
if someone gets injured during a game. they can sit out. and they get sympathy
we have to suck it. and continure being on one of our toes

First off anyone who says it isn't a sport has no clue. Only if you are a dancer do you know what it is. Now if you were talking about nightclubbing then no. But what you are talking about is professional dancing. It is a competitive sport. Why would they put it on TV and have people train for long periods of time if it wasn't a competition. I am not a dancer but I have done competitive sports and anytime you are in competition you are participating in a sport. This even includes cheer-leading (in which I am not a fan of), and figure skating. With all the hard work and competition involved you can be proud to say without a doubt that it IS a sport, it's just a very good looking one. Heck even dancers come off stage with bruises and bloody noses, LOL.

I totaly understand where you are comming from and i think it deserves as much appreciation as a sport (i do colorguard that involves dance and i practice way more than sprots teams do)
its not a sport be cause there is no concreate way of determining the score like in baseball (score based on runs) or hocky (score based on goals)
a sport has a concrete system unlike dance cheering wintercolorguard, figureskateing, ect
i can not agree with number 4 because if you have 2 judges in the same caption they could put down different scores for the same thing the are human and proned to be diverse
it is like comparing a mutiple choice test to an essay test, multiple choice is like sports while the essay that is more opinion based in like performing arts.

this is long but it makes a lot of since!!
dance is an art; competitive dancing is a form of art too, also a sport.
answering the asker i guess its because not many people know about competitive dancing. but i think it should be one. i think you couldnt classify 'dance' under a sport but you could classify 'company dancing' (competitive.) it pretty much depends on the persons opinion.
in the american heritage dictionary this is their definition of a sport.
"Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. "
that fits company dancing as far as im concerned
also i think another thing people dont realize is that yeah in sports you play against other 'teams' in dance, we compete against other pieces. and yes, we are competing for first place. at comptitions- thats "first overall" scoring in your category. if you win first overall, you QUALIFY for some national competition spots, and conventions. we can win other smaller things, too. one is a title, such as Ms. Teen Starpower whereas other sport teams can win the title "sec champions 2003".. does all of that make sense?
this is a response to PTK. dont post something on here unless you know its true because people are looking for answers that they proabably dont want to be wrong.
1. you said it must 'involve a puck or ball or sometype'
track?? diving?? that is considered a sport last time i checked (take olympics for an example.)
2. you said also that it 'must be influenced by the crowd'
what??? the last time i checked- referees were the ones deciding the points, not audience or crowd. what sport has the crowd determining scores?? and if you are talking about the fans then what is the dancers audience?? that is our fans.
and if you are seriously talking about the way the crowd effects the playing then HELLLOOOOO!!! if we are being cheered on then guess what! we are going to do better. if the audience is silent- it will make us nervous and mess up. what are you not getting here?
you said that other 'sports' were harder.
in 2006 the most athletic sport in america was classified as PROFESSIONAL football. ballet was second. above basketball, baseball, track and whatever other sports.

I figure 10 to 1 if you got enough people together to put up a stink about it you could get dance classified as an artistic sport by the modern world. Sport has become or maybe always has been a broad term.
I will proudly say that Dance is an Artistic Sport. Keep the name Artistic Sport alive and I bet some body will talk to you a few years down the road about the Artistic Sport of Dance. :)

1. no its not. Most dancers cant compete in a sport while most athletes can. Trust me i can dance and do sports, sports is much harder. nothing in dance compares to getting smashed by a 300 pounder.
2.Technicality has nothing to do with sports.
3.ok sure its competition i'll grant you that.
4.once again you are judged by a criteria so it is a competition. Not a sport
5.look above
Sports in a sense is an artform. Being competitive does not make it a sport. I guess that if you consider hiking canoeing and swimming a sport so is dancing but they're not neither is dancing. Chess is competitive, it is hard because it requires alot of thinking, not a sport. Beauty pagents are judged still not a sport.
For it to be a sport it must:
1. involve a ball or puck of some sort.
2.Must involbe athleticism which can be translated to other sports (dance does have footwork which can be used in other sports)(eliminates golf)
3. Must be influenced by the crowd(eliminates Tennis badminton and volleyball)
For the reasons listed above it is not a sport. And you cant say its just as hard as anyother sports if you dont know what athletes have to do. If your not putting in hours of practice where vommitting is something common it is not anywhere near as difficult as that.
EDIT: For those who say its exercise therfore its a sports. Shopping is an exercise. Is shopping a sport?

Because it's an art. OK, why physics is not a sport? I mean, chess is sport... Physics is harder... There are physics competitions... Physics is science, that's why.
Dance is not a sport because it's art. Yes, it's just as hard, but who said that art is supposed to be easy? Yes, there are competitions, so what? I don't see how dancing as art sounds not good enough. I don't understand this fascination with sport idea. Well, maybe I do, because sport is popular.
Dancing, with all the technique involved, is supposed to be beautiful. That's the main objective. That's why it is art. Soccer or swimming are not meant to be beautiful. On the other hand, no one in the audience wants to see a ballerina with perfect technique but dancing mechanically like a perfect robot. The main purpose of technique is to make your dancing beautiful, not for you to merely win a contest.

Most sports have a specific goal. They are also mostly one kind of way to play them. Dance is not a sport like diving is not a sport. But they both require lots of practice. I don't think gymnastics is a sport either, but it's still tough. Really tough. I'll stick to basketball.
I agree with people that dance is more of an art than a sport. Sports don't require as much concentration as dance. Sports are rougher and aren't really planned. Sure, there are plays, but you never know how a game will turn out. With dancing, you have to do every pose exactly. Dance is more pleasing to the eye than sports. Maybe not to extreme sports junkies, but you get the idea. There are a lot of differences between sports and dance, but doing a certain pose can be just as hard as throwing a 3 pointer.
We all get bruises, we all get blisters, we all get sore. And quite frankly, I don't get the pointy shoes, but we all choose our sports/activities.

I agree with Einstein. It is as physically challenging as a sport. But theres no set "rules" to dancing. There are dance competitions and not to mention reality shows with dancing. In this case it would be a sport because theres a certain way you have to do it sometimes but thats only for dance specificity for something that your competing in...the judges tell you what they want and that will be your sport but in general theres no basic guidelines that apply to EVERYONE like other sports have. So it depends on how you look at it I guess :)

Dance may not be officially recognized as a sport, but I consider it one--there are competitions and teams and it is the hardest exercise I have ever done (besides synchronized swimming, which is also a sport, and is even recognized in the olympics, though many people call it an art)
And PTK, just FYI, tennis, badminton, volleyball, and golf are all very official sports, even if they do not meet your list of rules. And tennis is quite influenced by the crowd. They are just quieter when the game is actually being played.

Dance is an art because you are making lines and shapes with your body. These figures, shapes, outlines, ect, are supposed to be beautiful, like ballet or jazz for instance. You try to make your body pretty, a perfect percise line(s) or shape(s) from your head to your toes. Thats why it is hard. In tap, you try to create sounds to accompany the lines and make it look and sound good. Hip hop and such are shrap jagged lines. Dance is an art because its supposed to form a line, every motion, movement a line, perfect picture, beauty. This is why it is hard-you try to make it beautiful. I'm a dancer; i know for a fact. Dancers do things to their body for thet perfect picture. We get bruses, blisters, pull muscles, sparin ankles a lot of other stuff. Dancing is an art.
