I have no problem with polygamy being legal PROVIDED that polyandry also be made legal as well. what's good for the gander is also good for the goose.

I read a great article on the drawbacks of polygamy to a society. In the article, the author was blaming the issues in the middle east on polygamy, not on Islam.
The basic premise was that the rich and affluent had many wives. As a result, there was no way for the poor / uneducated / unappealing to have any wife at all (there are only so many women!) The net result was a significant portion of males have NO option for marriage - ever!
Then enters in a religion (or a profit) that promises a poor, uneducated, man with no prospect of ever having a wife "40 virgins" if they blow themselves up.
I am not saying that I agree with this theory, but I think that it is important to understand that when you start talking about polygamy, it is not just a choice between a man and several woman to marry (or visa versa, a woman to marry several men), but a change in society that will impact everything from the availability of woman for all men - to the way that homes are built and food is bought (yes, those get impacted too!)

The problem with polygamy is how it is viewed, which is a result of how it is practiced by the few offshoot groups of Mormons which are not affiliated with the actual Mormon Church which does not condone polygamy.
These radical groups usually consist of an older man having several teenage wives under the age of consent. The problem is not that they have several wives, but that these wives are under the age of consent and have been taught to believe in a hegemonic way.
If these fringe groups were removed from the thought of polygamy, and polygamy were thought of as an adult woman having 2 adult husbands or an adult man having 2 adult wives, it would not be viewed as reprehensible.
Any legal arrangement that an adult enters into with other adults, whether it be a business relationship or a personal relationship, should be between those who enter that relationship.
If they are consenting adults, it is really none of my business what they do.

Haven't given it much thought yet but it's very interesting.
However, it wouuld be more of an issue for straight people because they are the ones "bound by the sanctity of marriage" so it would be interesting to hear their views.
Lots of gay couples I know are monogamous and conversely, lots of straight couples are polygamous (mostly on one party's side and without the knowledge/consent of the other). I'm not judging anyone, just telling it like it is. (On the plus side for gay people, I think that means we don't need external controls like the law to realize a solemn vow is one taken seriously. And they accuse us of being "threats to the family". Go figure.)
Did I say, no judgements?
Whoops.

> Should polygamy be legal?
NO. Absolutely not. Polygamy has, in the past, almost always meant "polygyny" -- in which rich men get to have lots of wives.
The problem is that if some men have lots of wives, there will be disenfranchised teenage boys who can never get married. Some societies kicked them out to annoy the rest of the world (e.g. FLDS). Others... had bachelor gangs running around; rape was institutionalized, both hetero- and homosexual. Check your old testament, especially the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, for descriptions of this kind of society. It's not the kind of civilization you'd want to live in.

No, because Polygamy injures people over fiscal matters.

The only sex/relationship that should be illegal are child molestation or rape. I don't see where the government should legislate any short of moral behaviour except if it affects the health and well being of groups or individuals.

How exactly will same sex marriage lead to polygamy? Because homosexuals don't know what monogamy is? Talk about ignorance!!
Polygamy isn't really something our society can support. If people want to do it, that's their choice but it's illegal for good reason.

Yes, I firmly believe that adults should marry who they want as long as they are consenting adults, and should not be imposed upon them the "morality" of others.

I'd support it. I definitely don't think I could ever do it, I tend to get terribly jealous sometimes, but if people want to do it then who am I to stop them?
