JURY duty means having to sit in on a criminal trial along with 11 other people, and decide if the person being tried is guilty or innocent. If the group decides he/she is guilty, they can recommend what punishment to give him/her. When you are old enough to vote in elections, you become eligible to be chosen at some point in your life to be called to sit in on a jury.
Only if you have a VERY VALID excuse can you get out of it (by this, I mean, if you are disabled, cannot drive to wherever the trial is, or cannot leave your job without being fired, etc.)
