There seems to be very little taught about standards, morals, manners by teachers and parents.
Plus...in my opinion, without prayer and mention of God, our children probably feel that there's no hope?????
This society keeps getting worse, and I believe it's because we have pushed the LORD out of just about every aspect of living!

Well, it sounds like the same old story, but I repeat it anyway---what can you expect in a nation where the #1 watched show for years was on HBO about the mafia, because the only place it could be viewed with its content was on some channel like HBO, and now, it is so common in nature it is on the A&E channel? I can remember when certain cop shows were dropped because they were considered too violent (Starsky & Hutch for one) and a few years down the road they were tame compared to what was being put on the tv in prime time. Almost every single young man I know (I am a 55 year old mom of 4) watches shows like the Family Guy and other such stupidity and thinks it is hilarious (I won't bore you with my opinion of this type of show). So goes the tv, so goes the nation in a completely digital world like ours! Just my opinion. You DID ask, right?

If you read "From Dawn to Decadence: Five Hundred Years of Western Cultural Life," by Jacques Barzun, the history of rise and fall is a bit more clear.
So, in perspective, there are periods of less social control, and today is one of them. Combined with more technology (video gaming and weapons), it's a deadly mixture. Drug abuse doesn't help.
You might do well to read "The Fourth Turning," Strauss and Howe, who identify a four-generational cycle in American hsitory. Presently, they expect 2005-2035 to be a period of testing a la WWII era.
Try "A Philosophy of Universality," Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov, and "The Path of Virtue," Jonathan Murro. They express some more classical values which transcend particular places and historical periods.
And make sure you are safe as possible, even at school :)
cordially,
j.

It's a combination of things:
1-The celebrity culture which defines value as who can get the most attention;
2-The entertainment industry that glorifies violence in order to make a profit. If I had a dime everytime I heard a studio executive say "Well, yes I personally think that's wrong, but..." I'd never have to work;
3-Parents who obsess over their own image rather than teaching their children right and wrong by setting a good example;
4-Schools and teachers who won't bother to recognize and help troubled children, but instead just choose not to get involved;
5-Various government and private organizations that work so hard to lessen the value of each individual. Yes, I'm talking about NARAL, Planned Parenthood, and other organizations.
In the end, it's up to each of us to do whatever we can, however little that may be, to make a difference in the lived of young people.

A number of things.
A lack of good role models (sports figures, music stars, actors are caught in all kinds of serious criminal activity).
No discipline in the homes anymore (parents don't participate at all in their kid's education or activities). In a typical home, the kids are in their rooms on the computer, the parents are each somewhere else working or watching TV or on their own computers. No one talks to their kids anymore.
Lack of respect, manners, and discipline taught to the kids at an early age. Children are put into daycare as soon as possible, so they are raised by strangers for years. Then into school (which are seriously underfunded and understaffed) where they don't learn anything except how to cheat on tests using text messaging (which is accepted practice these days).
No one has taught these kids what is right and acceptable social behaviour, and no one takes the time anymore to talk to the kids and gain their trust and respect. By the time a kid is 15 or 16, they no longer have the basic social skills and morals adults expect (but aren't willing to teach).

All of the school shootings going on lately?
What is this, some kind of paranoid bad news to sell news papers and get people to thinking stupidity?
Your chances of being shot in a school is less than getting killed in a shower from hot water scald.
We as a nation will spend billions making people paranoid and the same money could eliminate the need for not having potable water in the entire world.
We have become idiots. Look at Arkansas water shortage because of our environmentalists wanting to preserve a snail in a river in Florida.
We will make whole states suffer to save some dumb snail in one river some where in the United States and that same snail lives in a thousand places else where.
We have millions of people with out enough to eat, yet we spend billions upon billions to be fools and wipe out peoples lives.
So what do we do as a nation? We make people paranoid, make news headlines of fear mongering and encourage idiots to do idiotic things just to get our attention for the poor little me idiots.

I think that media is altering perceptions of reality, so that things that are insignificant are magnified, and that generally this will lead a lot of idiots to do copy cat activities.
It will also tend to warp ones perception of today's youth.
The 19-25 year-olds of today are far more disciplined, conservative, and intelligent than their predecessors . Never judge people or reality by news reports in the "main-stream" media. It's not a fair, balanced, or true report of younger people today.

I believe it has a lot to do with peer pressure today. If your not in the "in group" and those that are make fun of you, and bully you, a lot of anger and hatred builds up. In most cases mom and dad both have jobs and there is no one to unload all this on when you get home and the cork finally pops. Look at the time line and you'll discover there was very little of this before "they" took bibles and Jesus out of the schools. Back then you could go to a bible study and find another person who cared about you.

Total lack of Love at home. Total lack of empathy. Total absence of recognition by the family.
Imagine you come home , and there is no one to see you, talk to you, feed you. Then the parents come in staggering, drunk, fighting with each other. You hate the atmosphere . You go to your room and glue yourself to the TV. You watch gory serials of shooting , killing ... whatever.
You build up hatred against the world and , particularly hatred against people who 'seem' happy. One day the emotion erupts.
There is NOTHING wrong with the youths. There is EVERYTHING wrong with the parents. Show Love. show affection. Show concern.

Honestly....
We have taken power away from parents and teachers and administrators in schools. You can't disciple or say anything to kids today. You might hurt their feelings or whatever...
I think that schools can't do anything for fear of retribution. If you discipline or expel a child who causes problem their parents sue and get millions because you mistreated their poor baby..... Parents do not take things serious or responsibly. Too many kids being raised in broken homes, with no good male influence. (these seem to be all boys huhhh)
Then you have the kids who have problems and see on TV what other teens do and they copy cat. I will show them>>>> and stuff like that.
It is sad that those kids do feel like they can go to anyone parents, teachers, counselors or even their peers....

The obsessive thought of entitlement, lack of good parenting, lack of stability, lack of attention. Kids today all need a good ***-whipping without someone screaming "abuse". Moral degenerates abound in this society. Also, instead of putting kids on medication to control their thoughts and moods, how about actually interacting with them and doing proactive interventions? How can kids have guns in their homes without parents noticing something like that? Parents, friends, teachers, siblings have to take notice of things and then follow-up if something seems wrong. There are ALWAYS signs before something happens.
