Marco Polo came into the world in 1254. His father, the explorer Nicolo Polo, had left Marco's mother when she was pregnant. Marco lived in a city called Venice. It wasn't the best place for growing up. By the time Marco's father returned, Marco was 14 years old! When his father decided to go on another exploration, he agreed to take Marco with him. A few years later, Marco Polo, his father, and his father's friend left on a long trip. On their trip they visited many places. On this trip, Marco Polo discovered eye glasses, ice-cream, spaghetti, and the riches of Asia! When he returned, no one believed his stories of the riches he found in Asia. Marco Polo showed them some of the riches he had brought home. That made Marco Polo famous. When Marco was near death, a priest came in his room to ask him if he'd like to admit that his stories were false. Instead, Marco said,"I did not tell half of what I saw". Those were his last words.

Some contemporary sources present, beside Venice, the Adriatic island of Curzola as possible birthplace of Polo. The island in Polo's time was part of the Republic of Venice, but today is a Croatian island named Korčula . This possibility was recently reported even by the Encyclopedia Britannica. So I would say either Italy or Croatia!

Marco Polo was born in Venice in 1254. Yet nowaday there is the Polo family Home, that is nothing more that a normal house of merchants of XIII-XIV Century. Marco Polo was one of the many Venetian Merchant of XIII century, travelling in whole Middle and Far East. His special is that, during he was in prison in Genoa after Meloria Defeat he dictated the Milione to Rustichello. ............. ;) However please thow away that book that do neither says which nation gave birth to Marco Polo !
