Hi 8claws, a good ammonia level for any size tank is zero, this also goes for the nitrite-both of which are killers in even small amounts. This is why it is essential to have a water test kit to monitor your parameters. This is especially the case when cycling your tank. although these toxins will be present during the cycle doing large partial water cahnges ensures they are kept to a bare minimum. A fishless cycle would completely remove the danger to your fish.

The ideal level is zero, but it'll take a few weeks until the tank is cycled to get there. If you have fish in the tank, you want to try to keep it under 0.5 ppm (which will mean water changes). If you're cycling the tank without fish, it doesn't matter - the ammonia will eventually be converted to nitrite, then nitrate by bacteria as the population increases. Ammonia is only a concern because it's toxic to fish. In a typical cycle, the ammonia starts to decrease within the first week. If you increase the water temperature n the tank, the bacteria that convert it willl reproduce faster and this can decrease your overall cycling time.

Ammonia should be zero in every tank. You need to cycle it though, so you will see ammonia. Try a fishless cycle to avoid fish deaths. Or, be sure to do water changes to keep the levels low in hopes the fish can survive.
