Why don't they make it so that I has two horizontal lines one on top and the other on bottom?

Because various designers make type faces that are different and the type face here is sans serif, which means without the extra little decorations like the letters Y A and H in the Yahoo logo. On some older typewriters, especially portables, there was no 1 key, you used the l instead.

Because they're using 'Arial Narrow' font instead of having a choice of fonts available. I also wish that diagrams could be produced here.

That depends on the font that's being used.
In courier they look almost identical. In verdana, there is a noticeable difference.
