In order by release date, the legendary PC mystery stories would be:
- Myst & Riven (sequel)
- Shivers & Shivers 2 (sequel)
- Morrowind
- Oblivion (related to Morrowind, but not a sequel)
- Bioshock (brand new last month)
Depending upon the power of your PC - and especially your video card - the earlier ones will perform better than the recent ones.
Myst and Riven were heavily advertised and abundant in stores for a years-past holiday season, so it was widely sold if not a breakthrough in PC gaming.
Shivers and Shivers 2 have old game engines (mostly static views, like Myst/Riven) but will have you on the edge of your seat. Sometimes its so spooky you'll jump.
Morrowind and Oblivion are wonderful extended stories, if not totally traditional mysteries. With true free-roaming exploration of large worlds, these were breakthroughs in gaming engines and still stand as (arguably) the best of first-person gaming.
Bioshock adds horror to the mystery. Also, there's more of a first-person shooter (FPS) feel as your means of exploring the mystery. Like Morrowind & Oblivion, part of the initial challenge is figuring out what you're supposed to do, how you're going to do it, and where to proceed.
In summary: The older games are worth trying if you've never played them before. The newer games give a more realistic feel. Whatever you choose, enjoy!
