cats for example have whickers on their faces that are the width of the widest part of their body so that they know where they can and cannot go. if their whiskers don't fit they won't either and they are likely to get stuck.

Why do some animals have whiskers and others don't? Allison Iyo; Hilo, HI

The animals that have whiskers need them. Why? All the better to feel with. "

Whiskers come in really handy for animals that are active at night. For example, a cat's whiskers act like long, thin fingers. They help the cat feel its way in the dark and keep from bumping into things.

Whiskers also help some animals find food. A walrus's stiff whiskers are great at feeling for clams and other creatures hiding on the sea floor. And a river otter's whiskers can feel the vibrations of a fish moving through murky water. This tells the otter exactly where and when to chomp.

the whiskers are about as long as the animal is wide, so if they're trying to squeeze into a place, they see if their whiskers can fit through so they don't get stuck trying to figure it out.
