I've finished binding off the end and the only thing that is wrong with my scarf is that my tail is still on. I don't want fringe so I need to get rid of it, and I'm not sure if it would mess it up if I just cut it off.

The tail is at the beginning of the scarf. Not at the end. I'm speaking of the tail you have at the very beginning.

Take a needle or crochet needle and weave it through the stitches, first in one direction and then in another. This will keep it from unraveling. The next time you knit something take the "tail" and stretch it along the first row you will knit after you have cast on and knit over the "tail".

Under no circumstances cut it off as it may unravel in time. You need to neatly weave the tail end into stitches on the cast off edge.so that it cannot be seen.

it doesn't matter whether the tail is at the beginning or end it should still be done in the same way

Chances are, cutting the tail off will cause unraveling sooner or later. Try weaving the tail ( under over... under over ), through the first stiches you cast on. After doing that, clip with nail trimmer or sharp scissors.

if you cut the whole tail off, the entire project will come undone, what you want to do in weave it into your work on the wrong side of the scarf.
