They approached the indigenous peoples as if they were sub standard.

Due to religious ideology and technology advancements such engineering, beasts of burden (horses), metal and alloys (iron, bronze, copper, etc) and chemicals and processes (gun powder, glass, etc). The Europeans believed they were a superior race of people.

The Europeans also had a somewhat organized government with writing and accounting, a somewhat modern science, with astronomy and mathematics. To assert their conquests they had military advantages such as iron swords, and canons, muskets etc.

Also European culture at that time had a feudalistic governing system which was always fighting each other, and a Roman Catholic Church which was fighting Muslims, Protestants and all sorts of threats to its authority. This made the European culture one based on wars and conquest.

When they discovered the relatively disorganized and disadvantaged technology peoples, the Europeans assumed they had been chosen to teach, lead and take whatever was around b/c the indigenous people were incapable of doing so (they were savages and needed to be converted-shown the way), also it was much more easier for them to do it this way.

When small pox started to decimate the indigenous population and the fact that the indigenous peoples organization and their in-fighting b/w tribes they were unable to catch up technically and stop their destruction.

The indigenous people were unable to put up much of a fight to show, and assert their power to gain concessions and respect for their way of life, land and culture from the Europeans.
