I wrecked my Firebird and have almost completely restored it to original except for the steering column (deployed airbag). I found a steering column with the airbag intact and the ignition key from the exact same year and model. Now that they are switched (everything matched up), all the lights and everything electrical works, but it won't turn over. Could it be that the keys have the little chip and the one from the new column is confusing my car?

Thank you for the advice. I will certainly try the ignition cylinder first, though. Seems the simpler choice. Thanks again.

That is correct. You will need to have the computer re-programed to the new key ship, or have a new key cut using a blank with the correct chip. If you have the old key and new one, most locksmiths can read the chip on the old key, and cut a new one using the correct blank.

You could also change the lock cylinder and use the one out of the original column if you still have it!

Expect to pay $40-60 for the key. Re-programing the computer will cost more.

If you jump the starter wires at the ignition block does the engine turn over? If it turns then it's in the column, if not you mat need to start tracing you ignition system.
