Singh means Lion. In the Punjab region of India the name is commonly found there because the founder of Sikhism, Nanak seeked to eliminate Caste System all differences between men and women. Many Sikh women will have the name Kaur meaning princess.

An interesting fact is that Singapore means Lion-City in certain Indian languages. Most likely founded by Hindu pilgrims as they went across South East Asia and colonized Indonesia and other islands

All members of the Sikh religion have the name Singh. All Indians with that name are, or were, members of that religion.
